in registration fees credited to the family account. Completing the registration
process includes paying the family and sport fees, and also resolving ALL
other outstanding registration or financial issues with the registrar, prior
to the closing date.
PLEASE NOTE NEW THIS YEAR:

competition at the 13 year old level and above. CAC will field MULTIPLE 13 & 14

placed on a County team, based on space available. IMPORTANT-- ALL
players 13 and older need to register for COUNTY Basketball prior to
the September 30 closing date!

In order to participate in Intramural or clinic basketball, child’s registration
must be complete and paid by the October 28 closing date. Completing the

resolving ALL other outstanding registration or financial issues with the
registrar, prior to the closing date.
OCTOBER 6- OCTOBER 28 Clinic registration accepted, ages 5-6, $50
Important note—Clinic often fills up quickly, PLEASE register on time.
2- Age eligibility
Player’s age eligibility is now determined by the player’s
age on September 1, 2008. This date is now used by Anne Arundel County for
determining eligibility for participation in County competition, and the CAC
will use it for the purpose of determining placement in the CAC intramural and
clinic programs as well. Players may apply to “play up” one age level (based on
player’s ability, AND space availability in that age group, as determined by the
commissioner and the age group coordinator), but may NOT “play down” an age
level unless the player demonstrates that special needs exist, please contact
basketball@croftonsports to request special placement consideration in
advance of placement sessions. NEW FOR 2008 - A player may also apply to play up
for grade level—i.e., a player who turns 9 between September 1 and December 31,
and is in 4th grade, may request to play in the 9-10 league—request
must be noted on registration! Please see below for other criteria to “play
up”. Players must be at LEAST 7 years of age on September 1, 2008 in order to
play intramurals. Due to space constraints we CAN NOT allow 5/6 year olds to
play “up” in intramurals, they may only participate in clinic.
3-Procedures for Tryouts and Placements
County--Two initial tryout sessions will be held, and then an initial cut
list will be posted. Subsequently, a third and or fourth session may be held
prior to the posting of a second and final cut (except for those 13 years and
older). All players not selected for a county team will have their
registration placed into the Intramural pool, will have the difference in
registration fees credited to the family account, and are requested to attend an
Intramural placement session in November. All hopefuls MUST participate in at
least one of the first two (initial) sessions in order to be considered, and are
encouraged to attend both. All who are selected to continue after the first cut
MUST attend the third (and fourth if held) session in order to be guaranteed
further consideration for placement on a county team. If a scheduling conflict
exists which prevents a participant from attending as required, an exemption
must be requested prior to the start of the tryout process. Due to the large
number of participants, exemptions are granted only in extreme cases. This is
to ensure fairness to those who do attend as scheduled. Contact
basketball@croftonsports.com if there is an unavoidable conflict, to request
an exemption.
Intramural— In order to provide balanced competition in the intramural
leagues, evaluations will be held at ALL age levels in November for the purpose
of determining team makeup. See description below.
Playing up in Intramurals—
The first priority for our Intramural program is to
furnish fair and balanced competition in our leagues, and to run leagues that
are both fun and physically challenging for all the kids involved. Therefore,
as in all athletics, our leagues are built around players’ ages, and then we
attempt to create teams within the leagues to balance the abilities of the
participants of each league. Therefore, when weighing a request from a
participant to “play up” the following factors will be reviewed—
1-
Space available in the league after all registrations received—we will
NOT have more than 10 players per team, and due to space constraints, we cannot
create additional, smaller teams simply to honor placement requests.
2-
Ability level—all players applying to “play up” should attend an
evaluation session for the older age group as well as one for their actual age
group. The Age Group Coordinator in conjunction with the Commissioner will
determine if the player’s ability level is on a level which is comparable to the
mean level of the older group. Players who are determined to have insufficient
physical maturity/ skill/ athleticism to compete with the players of mean
ability level within the older group shall not be permitted to play above their
age and/ or grade level.
3-
Comparative ability levels of those wishing to “play up”—if there are
more players wishing to “play up” than spaces available, the Age Group
Coordinator in conjunction with the Commissioner will utilize evaluation ratings
to determine which children will be placed in the older league, based on
ability.
4-
Age/ grade level shall be the final determinant if ability levels are
judged to be sufficient and comparable—i.e., the older of two players of
comparable ability shall be shown preference.
5-
All decisions shall be made by the age group Coordinator in conjunction
with the Basketball Commissioner.
Clinic— No tryouts—see description below.

Clinic Basketball, 5- 6 year old, $50 Children must be 5 by September 1
in order to participate. We will attempt to provide separate Clinic programs for
boys and girls, if the enrollment permits, otherwise it will be a coed program.
Instructional, 1 day per week, Mainly Sundays, some Saturdays possible,
December- March. Clinic basketball is instructional, not competitive; therefore
no placement sessions are held for Clinic. Teams are formed randomly, and
players will be contacted by early December. Skill development in a fun setting
is emphasized.
Intramural (House) Basketball, 7-12 year old, $80 Age as of September 1
determines eligibility. Emphasis is on skill development, with competition, and
equal participation (each player plays at least ½ per game). Games, practices
held in Crofton. Special playing rules apply at each age level (see rules posted
above). Must be registered and paid by the closing date in order to
participate. Placement schedule will follow. One weekly practice Monday-
Saturday, games held on Sundays (Sunday practices until games begin). Age
and grade level as of September 1 determines placement. Players may apply to
“play up” one age level (based on player’s ability, AND space availability in
that age group, as determined by the commissioner and the age group
coordinator), but may NOT “play down” an age level unless the player
demonstrates that special needs exist, please contact
basketball@croftonsports to request special placement consideration in
advance of placement sessions.
In order to provide balanced competition in the intramural
leagues, evaluations will be held at ALL age levels in November for the purpose
of determining team makeup. All registered are requested to attend ONLY one of
the two evaluation sessions. We will attempt (but not guarantee) to honor
placement requests, however, team parity and balanced competition is the main
priority in placements. Placement requests made by those who attend a placement
session are given first priority. NOTE--If you attend County tryouts and are
not selected for a County team, PLEASE attend an Intramural evaluation session
County Basketball, 8-17 year old, $90 Age as of September 1 determines
eligibility. Participation determined by tryout in October, those not selected
for a county team are automatically placed in the Intramural program. This
program is more competitive than Intramural. Playing time is a minimum ½ at age
8-9, and a minimum ¼, for older ages, more at the discretion of coach. Games
will take place throughout Anne Arundel County. Must be registered and paid by
the closing date in order to tryout. Tryout schedule will follow.
6- OPEN GYMS Tuesday September 2 through Friday October 3, Crofton Middle and
Nantucket Elementary. These are OPEN TO ALL CAC members, ages 8-17 as scheduled,
on a drop-in basis. This is a great opportunity to knock the rust off before
County tryouts, and have some fun. Registration info will be available at the
sessions. Schedule to follow:
7-CHAPERONES—In an effort to avert mischief in the schools, we will ask ALL
PARENTS to volunteer for a shift or two chaperoning during their child’s
practice or game period. By providing supervision in the halls while our program
is using the school facilities, we can prevent problems and foster a healthy
relationship with the schools.
Volunteers are needed. Our program is volunteer driven and will not function
without help.
Needed-- Evaluators for County Tryouts // Evaluators for
Intramural Placements// Coaches, Assistant coaches/// Gym Supervisors,
Scorekeepers for Intramural leagues //Equipment- uniform manager(s)// Intramural
Age group coordinators
PLEASE NOTE: Crofton continues to grow, but our facilities DO NOT keep pace. We
have had record registration in all age levels for three consecutive seasons,
and are facing increased competition from other agencies for limited gym time.
We have access to two full size gyms, and each season we have over 800
participants in our program. Last season it was necessary for our Clinic group
to play in Odenton, there is no guarantee that this space is available to CAC on
a year-to-year basis. It may become necessary to impose registration limits in
each age group PRIOR to closing dates, and then handle all registrations on a
first come, first served basis. PLEASE register on time to facilitate planning,
and PLEASE support any efforts to increase indoor recreational/ athletic space
in Crofton!
Please watch the website and the Crier for notices regarding organizational
meetings.
